The Macgillycuddy Reeks are the highest and most extensive
mountains in Ireland.
By the standards of many other country's mountains they are not very
high.
They are, however, rugged and convoluted. Relatively little effort
is required to attain the numerous summits and ridges around Sneem.
The views with which one is rewarded are out of all proportion to
the energy expended.
Vistas change radically over short distances. In the space of a
day's hiking one feels one has had a week's worth of visual reward.
WARNING:
The Reeks are wild, steep and unfrequented in places.
Although they are small mountains, they have claimed more than their
share of human lives. - A bright day can turn to mist right down to
sea level and in winter temperatures can drop quickly with
atmospheric pressure changes. In winter searching time is curtailed
by very short days and the nights are long and cold.
MOBILE PHONES WORK WELL IN MANY AREAS
Solo hiking off-trail is not recommended! Especially in winter.
